Integrating Sufism in Modern Psychology with Digital Counseling: A Holistic Psychospiritual Model for Mental Health

The global mental health crisis demands a comprehensive healing approach, particularly within Muslim societies where psychological and spiritual dimensions should be harmonized. This study develops an integrative soul-healing model that addresses limitations of modern psychology while drawing on Sufism to respond to contemporary mental health challenges. This study conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA 2020 protocol, complemented by bibliometric mapping with VOSviewer to examine publication trends and co-citation networks. Data were obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering publications from 2017–2025. Findings reveal substantial convergence between Sufism and modern psychology in promoting inner balance and well-being, despite epistemological differences. Sufi concepts such as tazkiyatun nafs, dhikr, muraqabah, and muhasabah show relevance to cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and positive psychology. These findings support contextualizing psychospiritual interventions within contemporary counseling, including digital counseling. The study proposes the Islamic Integrative Soul Healing Model (IISHM), or Model Penyembuhan Jiwa Integratif Islami (MPJII), comprising holistic diagnosis, psychospiritual intervention, and sustainable transformation. The model offers a framework for integrating Sufi values with modern psychological approaches in contemporary mental health counseling.
